"Arts & Nature as Therapy for Stroke Recovery"
Background & Challenge
Jubair (name changed for privacy) is a man in his late 30s currently seeking asylum in the UK. Shortly after arriving, Jubair suffered a stroke in his sleep. Thanks to quick action from his roommate, he received emergency medical care, preserving his cognitive functioning.
However, the stroke left him with significantly reduced mobility down his right side, his previously dominant hand. Overnight, Jubair faced the daunting challenge of navigating the asylum system while relearning how to use his body.
"Jubair shows immense pride in the work he produces, showcasing his art and home-grown plants each week."
How Vanclaron Supported Jubair
Jubair joined our 'Journey to Wellbeing' project at his residence, using arts, crafts, and nature as a dual pathway for recovery:
-
Physical Rehabilitation: Engaging in painting, drawing, and collage as physical therapy to build fine motor skills in his left hand while gently rehabilitating his right.
-
Nature & Gardening: Planting delicate seeds with his non-dominant hand while using his right hand to hold pots steady and pour water.
-
Mental & Emotional Wellbeing: Utilizing creative sessions to express himself, process trauma, and socialize during an emotionally demanding time.
The Outcome
Day by day, Jubair’s ability to add fine detail to his artwork is growing, right alongside his confidence, self-esteem, and independence. He takes huge pride in presenting his artwork and home-grown produce to staff and fellow service users every week.
